V- Ring Seals

V-ring seals prevent dirt, moisture, and other unwanted materials from entering machinery components while ensuring that lubricants remain sealed within. These versatile seals maintain the efficiency and longevity of your mechanical systems. V-rings stretch over the shaft and create a tight seal. Their flexible lip lightly contacts the counterface at a right angle to the shaft for an effective barrier against contaminants. These seals are highly effective, but they excel when used in conjunction with rotary shaft seals. So, if you want to extend the life of bearings, oil seals, and shafts, you should choose this combination, as it provides an additional layer of protection against contaminants and preserves lubrication. Independence Seal Company offers v-ring seals in various configurations and made of materials like Viton, NBR, silicone, EPDM, and so on. What are the benefits of V-Ring Seals??

The following benefits of V-ring seals make them a practical sealing choice in various applications.

  1. These seals are versatile and compatible with a wide range of shaft sizes. They can be used in various industrial applications for different types of equipment.
  2. By keeping contaminants out and lubricants in, V-Ring seals extend the lifespan of bearings, shafts, and oil seals, reducing maintenance costs and downtime.
  3. The lip of seals is flexible, so it can adapt to shaft movement surface irregularities, which ensures a consistent and reliable seal under various operating conditions.
  4. Our seals are easy to install and remove, allowing for quick maintenance and replacement without needing special tools or equipment.
  5. Our V-Ring seals are made from durable materials that can withstand harsh environmental conditions such as extreme temperatures, chemicals, and abrasive particles.
  6. Our V-ring seal design ensures minimal friction, which helps maintain machine efficiency and reduce energy consumption.

Types of V-Ring Seals We Offer

At Independence Seal Company, you will get a variety of V-Ring seals to suit different applications and requirements. We provide V-Ring seals in three distinct styles: VA, VS, and VL. These are available in two material options: NBR (black) and Viton® (brown).

  • VA Style: This is one of the most common V-ring seals with a straight backside face, standard cross-section, and short mounting length. We provide these V-ring seals in sizes from 2.5mm ID to 1,810mm ID to protect bearing arrangements in applications like gearboxes, drives, and electric motors.
  • VS Style: This style is distinguished by its wide body, standard low cross-section, and tapered back face. The VS V-rings provide a firm hold on the shaft, and are commonly used in agricultural and automotive applications. We provide these seals in 4 mm ID to 180mm ID sizes.
  • VL Style: This style features a compact axial cross-section and short mounting, and is designed as a replacement for labyrinth seals in confined spaces. We provide these seals in sizes ranging from 99mm ID to 540mm ID.

Applications of V-Ring Seals

We regularly design and develop V-Ring seals for the following applications:

  1. Electric motors: V-rings are used in electric motors to maintain efficiency and reduce the risk of damage and downtime due to contaminants,
  2. Gearboxes: V-Rings are used in gearboxes to prevent dirt and moisture ensuring smooth operation and extending the life of the gears and lubricants.
  3. Automotive Industry: In automotive applications, V-Ring seals protect various components such as axles, drive shafts, and gearboxes from contaminants.
  4. Mining Equipment: These seals are used in the mining industry to safeguard machinery from abrasive particles and harsh environments.
  5. Pumps: V-Ring seals help maintain the integrity of pumps by preventing the ingress of dirt and moisture, for consistent operation and reducing maintenance needs.
  6. Drives: In drive systems, these seals keep lubricants in and contaminants out, for the functionality and longevity of the components.

How to Choose the Right V-Ring Seal

When choosing the v-ring seal for your application, the following are a few factors to consider.

  1. Size: Measure the shaft diameter and select the ones that fits to it. You can also refer to our size charts or contact our team to find the exact dimensions required for your application. Ensure the internal diameter (ID) and external diameter (OD) are appropriate for a proper seal.
  2. Material: Select the material based on the operating environment. For example, we offer NBR (Black), suitable for general-purpose applications with good resistance to oils and greases. On the other hand, Viton® (Brown) is ideal for high-temperature applications and those involving aggressive chemicals or oils.
  3. Operating condition: You must address operating conditions such as temperature range, chemical exposure, and environmental conditions the V-Ring seal will encounter. Ensure the material and design can withstand these conditions.
  4. Compatibility with other seals: Check if the V-Ring seal will be used with other seals, like rotary shaft seals. Ensure compatibility to maximize sealing efficiency and protection.
  5. Mounting length:  Check how much mounting length is required for your application. The VA and VL styles have short mounting lengths, which are suitable for applications with space constraints.
  6. Performance requirements: Evaluate the performance requirements, like low friction, high durability, and resistance to wear and tear. So, choose a V-Ring seal that meets these criteria.

How to install V-rings seals?

Installing a V-Ring seal is an easy process that can be completed quickly and efficiently. Follow these steps to ensure a proper installation:

  1. First, you need to prepare the shaft.  For that, ensure the shaft surface is clean, dry, and free from any contaminants.  Check for any damage, wear, or sharp edges on the shaft that could damage the V-Ring seal during installation.
  2. Ensure you have the correct size and style of seal for your application.
  3. Now, gently stretch the V-Ring seal over the shaft without using excessive force. Also, do not use tools that could damage the seal.
  4. Place the V-Ring seal on the shaft so the sealing lip faces the counterface. The lip should lightly contact the counterface at a right angle to the shaft. Ensure the seal is evenly positioned and adjust if necessary to achieve a proper fit.
  5. Press the V-Ring seal into place and ensure it is seated properly on the shaft. The seal should fit snugly without any gaps or misalignment. Verify that the sealing lip is evenly contacting the counterface and that the seal is aligned correctly.
  6. Gently rotate the shaft by hand to ensure the V-Ring seal moves smoothly and maintains contact with the counter face.
